Overview
On the Ohama coast of Minami in Tokushima — a beach counted among Japan’s finest and famous for the loggerhead turtles that come ashore to nest — stands Hiwasa Hachiman Shrine, looking out over the Pacific.
History & Origin
The shrine’s founding is given as 1351. The Awa-shi records a Hachiman shrine placed at Hiwasa in that era, and it was long known simply as the Hachiman-gū of the harbour town.
Enshrined Kami
The principal deity is Hondawake-no-mikoto — the deified Emperor Ōjin, revered as Hachiman — enshrined with his mother Okinagatarashihime, the Empress Jingū, and with Tamayorihime. The shrine is invoked for safe childbirth, safety in travel and the home, freedom from illness, and success in study.
